The First Ever Writing Magazine Picture Book Prize!

The First Ever Writing Magazine Picture Book Prize!

I am so delighted to announce the launch of a brand new book prize today: the Writing Magazine Picture Book Prize! Being rather passionate about aspiring authors, WM editor Jonathan Telfer, my agent Julia Churchill and I put our heads together to come up with a way to help new writers get a rung on the picture book ladder.

The writing industry is very competitive and it can be very difficult to catch a break. The Picture Book Prize is free to enter and aims to discover new writers with exciting voices, and help open some doors. We’re looking for original picture book texts (no illustrations) from unpublished and unagented writers. The story can be rhyming or non-rhyming, with a word count of up to 800 words. The picture book should reflect traditional published picture book texts, which do not rely on novelty elements, such as pop-ups.

So what’s on offer?

The first prize winner will win a lunch consultation with top agent Julia Churchill and a year’s subscription to Writing Magazine AND £200.

The second prize winner will be offered a picture book critique through me through Writing Magazine Writing Courses and a year’s subscription to Writing Magazine AND £50.

The third prize winner will receive a year’s subscription to Writing Magazine.

Closing date is 29th September 2017.

For more information about the book prize and to find out how to submit, please click here.

Check out this month’s (August issue) Writing Magazine for a full feature about the book prize, with more information and tips for entering.  Also check out next month’s (September issue) for an analysis of published picture books and how exactly they are successful.

So, please spread the word to anyone who loves writing picture books! We’re really looking forward to reading your wonderful stories. Good luck to you all, and happy writing!
