Music to my ears

Music to my ears

One of the things I find truly inspiring is listening to music. So when I went for a long journey the other day, on went the CD player in my car. Perhaps because I’m a musician as well as a writer, I respond well to music and it helps me in my writing.

If there’s a scene I’m trying to capture, I’ll often put on a piece of music which demonstrates the mood or the pace and listen to it repeatedly while the scene in my mind unfolds. Instrumental soundtracks from movies are great for this and I fortunately find myself too swept up in the mood of the music and the story it tells to be distracted by which film it’s from and what is happening in the film at that time.

On my last journey I found the ideas really flowing for a new character and her dilemma. I have another long journey coming up. I’m hoping I’ll pick up where I left off. Bring it on- çds at the ready!
