Chapter book prize

After seeing how the Picture Book Prize has helped develop the careers of talented writers, I am delighted to announce the Writing Magazine Chapter Book Prize.

What is the Chapter Book Prize?

The Writing Magazine Chapter Book Prize aims to give a boost to talented but unpublished and unagented writers of children’s fiction.

What do I need to submit?

We will be looking for the whole opening chapter of your COMPLETED book, aimed at 7-9 year old children, with a maximum word count of 1,000 words.

Your completed book should be no longer than 15,000 words.

Please also submit a ONE-SIDE, DOUBLE-SPACED synopsis of the whole book.

Please also submit a brief 5-line pitch for your book. Sell it to us!

The story can be any genre and covering any topic.

Please DO NOT submit:

  • opening chapters longer than 1000 words;
  • chapters other than chapter one;
  • a chapter for a story which is not yet completed.

How will it work?

There will be a longlist, a shortlist, and finally, three winning entries for the Chapter Book Prize. Longlisted entrants will be asked to send in their first THREE chapters. Shortlisted entrants will be asked to submit the WHOLE text (so please ensure the whole text is written in advance!)

Entry is open to any writer who has not had a book of fiction for children contracted for publication by a third party or been taken on by an agent.

Judges will include top literary agent, Julia Churchill, from A.M. Heath Literary Agency, Writing Magazine editor Jonathan Telfer, and children’s author Amy Sparkes.

Please do not submit any story that Amy has provided feedback on previously.

Entry fee: £5.

What are the prizes?

2nd place – Critique on your opening chapter by Amy Sparkes; £50 prize money; a year’s subscription to Writing Magazine.
